Nate and Ben climbing up the security bars on the window.  Keeps the bad guys out and the crazy guys in.

Today, we went shopping. Here are both guys, happy and copacetic in the shopping cart.  As I pushed them into the store, I thought, "We got this".

And here is a picture 7 minutes later...

Henry said their war cries could be heard from aisles away.  One thing that is either good or bad, depending on the day, is that Ben is extremely not deferential to his older brother.  Nate pushes him off his steering wheel? Ben will horse collar him and go in for the 1-2 combo.  If you are looking for a place to quietly meditate, our house (or car or shopping cart) is not for you.

Pictures: Kruger Park

Would much rather deal with a crocodile than bilharzia (parasitic worms that may possibly swim up your pee pee) any day.

Talking with Nate #8

So the posts have been a little few and far between. This is because we have the internet speed of 1997 at our house here in South Africa and I give up when the page takes a month to load.  It's not frustrating at all.  Netflix is only a distant memory. Anyways, moving on...

While at the Pretoria Zoo...
Nate: This elephant has a tushy.  And a penis!

While searching behind the couch cushions...
Nate: Maybe you can find some chickens in here?

While wearing his Thomas the Train t-shirt...
Nate: Ben, do you love my shirt?

At breakfast...
Nate: This is my best friend named Mommy.

After dropping his trains on the floor by accident...
Nate: Oh my goodness.  Look what I did.

While protesting taking a bath...
Nate: I can't come to the bath because I too happy.

And while protesting going to preschool and wanting to stay home...
Nate: I too happy here! I can't go to school because I too happy! Not too sad!

Ben is 1!

Last Monday, Ben turned 1.  I know every parent says this but seriously! Where did this past year go?

This little dude had a great day.  We went to the zoo and Henry brought home boxes and boxes of gifts for Ben from the embassy mailroom from family and friends.  So many that the mailroom workers had to help bring all the boxes to the car.  And made fun of us.  Happy Birthday, Ben!

King of the Castle

Here is Ben, making himself comfortable in his brother's chair while Nate is away at preschool.  A bold move but as Patricia, our Malawian housekeeper, keeps saying, "Ben is a power boy!".  I don't know exactly what this means but I can only assume she is referring to both his brute strength and his ability to hold his own living with his wild brother.  Much like a Tony Robbins affirmation, she reminds Ben daily, "You! You are a power boy!".

In South Africa, there is a stark difference between the haves and the have nots.  This, of course, is not a problem limited to South Africa but it is very visible. Here are some pictures of an area pretty close by but also worlds away.

Talking with Nate #7

After dinner...
Nate: That was a hard dinner!
Me: A hard dinner? Or a good dinner?
Nate: A hard dinner!

Lately, Nate has been asking and answering his own line of questioning...
Nate: Do you think it's a yion (lion)? No! What is this? A gee-aaf (giraffe)? No! What is this? A tiger? YES! THAT'S RIGHT!

After learning his cousin, Zack, was at Disney World a few days ago...
Nate (randomly while sitting on my lap): Zack is going to Mousey's House!

After asking him what he did at school...
Nate: We slide down on slides on my tushy.

After asking him what he had for lunch and pretty sure this wasn't the right answer...
Nate: I had soup.

Cape Town: Stellenbosch

While we were in Cape Town, we spent one of the days at Spier Wine Farm.  It's winter here now and the off season so there were not many people there on the day we went.  Some South Africans told us it was too cold out but we thought the weather was pretty perfect.  70 degrees and slightly breezy.  We picked up a few supplies (sandwiches, homemade chocolate chip cookies, tomato mozzarella salad, grapes, and a bottle of pinotage) at the winery's shop and had a picnic on the grounds.  It would not be difficult to do this every day.

Cape Town: Table Mountain

This time in Cape Town we made it to the top of Table Mountain.  One can either hike up or take a 3 minute cable car ride to the top.  We opted for the cable car.  At the top of the mountain there is a restaurant, shop, and some trails to walk around.  Fortunately on our way up, there was no line at all and we made it to the top in under 10 min.  On the way down, it had started to rain and we had to wait in line a bit for the cable car.  Nate demonstrated great patience during this part of our excursion, yelling at the people in front of us, "Out of my way!".  We told him he needs to wait his turn and to be polite.  Not sure the lesson sunk in as a few moments later he whispered to me, "I do not need to be polite".  Oh yes, yes you do.

Robben Island in the distance.

The view from the top is pretty breathtaking.

Ben, behaving like a pro.

Nate, before taking a stand against waiting in line.

Going down in the cable car.

Cape Town: Camps Bay

Here are a few pictures from our first night on this trip to Cape Town.  We headed to Camps Bay for dinner and Nate and Ben loved playing on the beach.
